Pixel Reef’s Acclaimed VR Adventure Paper Beast Is Heading To PC This Summer

Developer Pixel Reef has announced that acclaimed PSVR title Paper Beast is heading to PC this summer with compatibility for some of the most popular VR headsets on the market, including Steam’s Valve Index, HTC Vive, and Oculus Rift.

A new trailer was cooked up for the occasion to mark the shift away from PSVR exclusivity. It showcases the very best of Paper Beast’s tranquil and pensive gameplay. Surreal animals scamper across vast, dreamy expanses that are as gorgeous as they are ripe for exploration.

If you missed out on the excitement when Paper Beast launched in March this year, Paper Beast asks players to explore a colorful ecosystem teeming with surreal life. It’s a world constructed from lost code and algorithms pooled from the darkest recesses of the Internet.

From binary, life has emerged, spawning exotic origami-like wildlife (hence the title), intriguing puzzles, and imaginative mysteries all borne from the mind of creator Eric Chahi, of Another World, Heart of Darkness, and From Dust fame.

From there, players must ply the land by shaping terrain, forming rivers, and weathering storms as the wildlife adapts and reacts. An unspoken narrative sees bonds form, and emotions stirred. All this is soundtracked by ‘the punk rock of TsuShiMaMire and the ambient style of Roly Porter’

It’s unfair to describe Paper Beast as merely a game given that it pushes the notion of an interactive experience to heights few other titles even approach. With this in mind, a PC port was inevitable.

The PC version isn’t just a copy-paste job, either. Pixel Reef is adding in continuous movement support, gameplay tweaks, visual upgrades, an expanded sandbox mode, and a raft of new fauna and flora.

There’s no firm release date quite yet other than ‘Summer 2020’, but we do know that Paper Beast will be available on Steam courtesy of a newly-minted store page on Valve’s digital storefront. As we await more news, Paper Beast will be available in demo form as part of Steam’s Summer Festival, which runs from June 16th to June 22nd.
