What to look for when buying the best monitor for PS5

If you aren’t fully up to speed on the latest monitor tech, it can be hard to determine which panel is best for your specific needs. For that reason, the following section will go over some of the realistic expectations of PS5 monitors and what you should be looking for when choosing one:

Does size matter when playing PS5?

The size of gaming monitors for consoles has definitely changed over the years, with many becoming smaller to gain a more competitive advantage. Thanks to the competitive nature of PlayStation 5 consoles, you’ll likely see many gamers playing on super-fast 27-inch panels over slower 40+inch alternatives.

The best monitors for PS5 come in a variety of sizes nowadays, giving gamers the option to prioritize speed and responsiveness over image quality and immersion.

What screen resolution to choose?

Screen resolution is a huge factor when you’re looking to purchase a monitor for PS5 consoles – mainly thanks to the fact that the next-gen console can push 4K image quality at 120Hz.

Like we said previously, to get the best visual experience possible, users should be looking to purchase a gaming monitor with a UHD (4K) screen resolution.

Monitor Screen Size and Resolution 1

Having said that, it’s always worth remembering that many ‘lesser’ screen resolution monitors offer better responsiveness.

Do you need HDMI 2.1 for PS5?

While you don’t need HDMI 2.1 to run a PS5, it is critical if you want to experience the console’s maximum performance. HDMI 2.1 is the latest version of HDMI and the only version that allows you to play games in 4K screen resolution at 120Hz refresh rate – one of the main reasons that make next-gen consoles so attractive.

But what exactly does 4K@120Hz actually mean? In short, it means that the PlayStation 5 can produce a stable 120FPS (frames per second) while in 4K screen resolution. If you know anything about computer hardware, you’ll know that that is no easy feat.

LG C2 29

Frame rates have a direct impact on the smoothness of your gameplay, with higher frame rates equating to smoother visuals. Aging consoles were limited to 60 frames at 4K, meaning moving images could be a little stuttery when playing titles with fast-moving images. That isn’t the case with next-gen consoles though. Better still, 4K image quality is a huge uplift when compared to 1440p resolution and 1080p resolution, meaning graphics look much more detailed and sharp.

Pairing all this with variable refresh rate technology (a feature that is relatively new to the PlayStation platform) translates into a liquidy smooth gaming experience that not only looks fantastic but is also void of annoying artifacts like screen tears.

Why are PS5 monitors so expensive?

One of the big issues with the best gaming monitors for PS5 is the price they come equipped with. To reap the benefits of PlayStation 5 consoles you’ll need a monitor that not only provides a UHD 4K screen resolution but an HDMI 2.1 port as well.

Unfortunately, this technology bumps up the price of gaming monitors exponentially. Some of the best monitors for PS5 fall into the $1000 category, so just keep this in mind if you are opting for the best of the best.

Is it better play PS5 on a TV or monitor?

One of the big questions we get asked here at WePC is, should I choose a gaming monitor or a gaming TV for console gaming?

And it’s a really good question – mainly because, historically, most console gamers would use TVs over gaming monitors. However, since gaming monitors are starting to get larger in size, the decision does start to become much more difficult.

Furthermore, because gaming consoles have become much more powerful in recent times, we need to start worrying about pixel response time, refresh rates, and adaptive sync technology – especially if you’re looking for the absolute best gaming experience.

For me, it all comes down to what you prioritize when gaming. For many, gaming is a casual activity that is more social than it is competitive. With that in mind, gaming on any TV with good picture quality and a 4K screen resolution will be more than enough. However, when we start to lean into the more competitive scenarios, large-screen gaming monitors start to become a much more attractive proposition.

More often than not, gaming monitors are much more responsive than gaming TVs – or TVs in general for that matter. They don’t suffer really as much from screen artifacts like screen tear, smearing, and ghosting, because they are equipped with specifications such as high refresh rates and low response times – something many TVs can’t boast.

Ultimately, a gaming monitor is still going to provide you with a better gaming experience. However, if you want a vessel that is great for both gaming and everyday use, some of the latest gaming TVs are more than equipped for the job at hand.

Cons
  • Relatively high price point

The Gigabyte FV43U is one of the latest – and most anticipated – gaming monitors the brand offers. With an array of high-end specifications, the FV43U gets our best gaming monitor for PlayStation 5 spot, ticking all the right boxes when it comes to both casual and competitive play.

The FV43U may not offer a great deal when it comes to stand ergonomics, but it makes up for it in picture quality and general responsiveness. It features a crystal clear 4K screen resolution alongside an equally impressive 144Hz refresh rate and low 1ms response time (MPRT). Gaming on this thing is incredibly immersive thanks to a combination of specifications geared towards responsiveness and its large 43-inch panel size.

Furthermore, to allow users to reap the full rewards of all the PS5’s features, the FV43U also comes equipped with HDMI 2.1 support – allowing gamers to enjoy 4K gaming at 120Hz refresh rate. Whilst the OSD may look a little old school, it offers up a tonne of features all geared towards increasing your gaming experience. Color are another standout feature of this panel, offering up an impressive color gamut that covers 99% of the Adobe RGB spectrum. Alongside this, the panel also provides VESA DisplayHDR 1000 certification, creating a stunning HDR experience that rivals many high-end TVs.

As for inputs, users can expect; 2 x USB 3.0, 1 x USB Type-C, 2 x HDMI 2.1, 1 x DisplayPort 1.4 (DSC), and 1 x 3.5mm audio out.

  • Quick 1ms response time
Cons
  • HDR content is poor
  • Bottom bezel feels flimsy

As far as gaming monitors for PS5 go, this has got to be one of the best the market has to offer. Granted, it might not have the screen immersion of the Gigabyte FV43U, but it more than makes up for it in general responsiveness and overall picture quality.

The Acer Nitro XV282K is one of the best HDMI 2.1 monitors the market has to offer. Alongside a stunning 4K screen resolution, the XV282K also brings a rapid 144Hz refresh rate to the table. This provides a silky smooth gaming experience that is void of annoying screen artifacts like tearing – especially when paired with the PS5’s VRR feature. Alongside this, the Xv282K also brings a speedy 1ms GTG response to the table that helps reduce general smearing and ghosting when playing titles with fast-moving images.

Whilst the XV282K does offer Vesa DisplayHDR 400 certification, HDR content isn’t the most impressive on this panel. HDR 400 is the entry-level standard for high dynamic range, so it comes as no surprise. On the plus side, the panel does offer HDMI 2.1 support that allows gamers to reap the rewards of 4K gameplay at 120hz refresh rate. All this sets you back roughly $900, making the XV282K very good value for money when compared against similar spec’d alternatives.

  • High peak brightness
  • 98% DCI-P3 coverage
  • High 160Hz Refresh Rate
  • Quick 1ms Response Time
Cons
  • HDR is a little lacking

The LG 27GP950-B is the successor to its fan-favorite 27GN950 – a monitor that outperformed many of its rivals when looking at responsiveness. It comes to the table boasting many of the same features we saw in the GN950, however, with the addition of HDMI 2.1 support, this monitor now becomes much more PlayStation 5 friendly.

As many know, LG is easily one of the biggest names in the game, providing some of the best monitors the market has to offer. The 27GP950 is another fine example of the quality LG provides, offering up everything you could want for a stunning visual experience.

Again, this monitor provides a UHD 4K screen resolution, low 1ms response time (GTG w/ overdrive), and Vesa DisplayHDR 600 certification. Alongside that though, users will benefit from the new Nano IPS panel found at the heart of this monitor, equipped with stunning color accuracy and high peak brightness that make for a decent HDR experience. Utilize the monitors VRR technology to benefit from a smooth and artifact-free gaming experience that is hard to beat. It offers support for both FreeSync (Premium) and G-Sync systems, great for users that want a 2-in-1 monitor for both console and PC gaming.

The LG 27GP950 retails for $750, making it one of the cheapest options in this guide. For me, that is easily the best value for money on offer, putting it high on our list of considerations for any PlayStation 5 gamer.

Cons

The LG C2 OLED TV is the only panel in this guide that comes equipped with OLED technology, offering self-lit pixels that provide truly stunning image quality. The pixels in the LG C2 OLED can turn off independently, helping to create true blacks that can’t be replicated by lesser panel technologies. If you’re looking for a big-screen experience that is great for gaming, movies, and everyday use, look no further – LG have you covered.

That being said, OLED does come with its downsides – one of which is the price. Whilst we’ll touch upon price a bit more later, know that this TV is the most expensive option in this guide. Having said that, it still offers up excellent value for money when everything is considered.

The LG OLED TV comes equipped with HDMI 2.1 support, a 120Hz refresh rate, and low >1ms response time – pairing together for a tear-free gaming experience that is void of smearing, blurring, and other annoying screen artifacts. The low response time ensures that ghosting is to an absolute minimum when playing fast-paced games, with the refresh rate helping to create smooth visuals as well. Better yet, with native AMD Freesync and G-Sync compatibility, you won’t experience screen tear on this great TV.

The 55″ TV isn’t the biggest in this guide, but it is the best in terms of color reproduction and contrast ratio. For many games, OLED technology will be wasted – better utilized for high-definition movies and Tv shows. Having said that, gaming still looks absolutely fantastic.

Like all OLED products, the LG 55″ C2 does run the risk of permanent burn-in if left on a still image. That being said, burn-in is becoming less problematic, with most companies providing anti-burn-in features.

Cons
  • Poor Ergonomics

Finally, we have the ASUS ROG STRIX XG43UQ – a large screen gaming panel that is another final example of ASUS’s high-end build quality and performance. Whilst this may look more like a TV than a gaming monitor, let’s not take anything away from its performance – it really does offer everything you could want for an excellent console gaming experience.

The ROG STRIX XG43UQ is one of the latest monitors to come out of the ASUS arsenal, equipped with all the high-end features you could want – including variable OD, FreeSync premium, ELMB, and a tonne of additional gaming features.

Features aside, raw performance is where this monitor truly shines. It provides a 144Hz refresh rate and low response time which, when paired together, offer up a smooth gaming experience that is void of screen artifacts like tearing, smearing, and ghosting. The VA panel in this monitor is almost identical to the Gigabyte FV43U, offering up a wide color gamut that covers 90% of the DCI-P3 space, 4000:1 native contrast ratio, and Vesa DisplayHDR 1000 certification. With a 4K screen resolution, this monitor offers up excellent picture quality that is on par with the other big-screen gaming panels in this guide.

The only real downside to this panel is the price tag – it falls into the $1200 price pool which, you guessed it, puts it in direct competition with the OLED gaming TV.

Cons

The best Min-LED gaming monitor for PS5 goes to the hugely popular (and expensive) ASUS ROG SWIFT PG32UQXE. ASUS’s latest project is a refreshed version of last year’s hugely impressive PG32UQX – another high-end 4K mini-LED 144Hz gaming panel.

The new 4K monitor will maintain many of the core features and specifications found in the PG32UQX (and PG32UQ), there are some exciting additions that should improve the overall functionality and performance of this display.

For a start, the PG32UQXE will come with an increased refresh rate of 165Hz (via overclock) alongside NVIDIA’s Reflex Latency Analyzer – allowing users to record the input lag received between mouse and display – explained in NVIDIA’s keynote speech.

Alongside this, the PG32UQXE will also offer a brand new ‘Adaptive mini-LED (AmLED) panel which should help reduce the chances of burn-in and luminance decay over time. The PG32UQXE will also see a reduction in local dimming zones (1,152 to 576) and peak brightness too – now offering 1000 nits compared to the 1400 luminance roof of the 2021 model.

  1. The AORUS FV43U does have 2 x HDMI 2.1 ports but they only run at 24G and not at 48G such as the Asus ROG Strix XG43UQ.
