Star Wars: Squadrons Release Date, Rumors, And News

If you were a fan of the old Star Wars: Rogue Squadron game back on the Nintendo 64, you’ll be overjoyed to hear that there’s a new dogfighting Star Wars game on the way. Star Wars: Squadrons has recently been announced with a short cinematic trailer and it looks more impressive than we ever imagined.

To add to the excitement, Ian Frazier, Creative Director of Motive Studios said “We created this game for every Star Wars fan who has ever dreamt about soaring across the galaxy in their favorite starfighter”.

Star Wars: Squadrons Release Date

If you were worried that you might have a long wait until you get your hands on this title, it seems that isn’t the case. We don’t often see games released so soon after their initial announcement these days, but Star Wars: Squadrons has a penned release date for the 2nd October 2020.

You can currently pre-purchase Star Wars: Squadrons for $39.99 / £34.99 / 39.99€. This title will be released on PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. There’s no news just yet on whether it will make an appearance on the next-generation consoles but we may find out closer to their release.

Star Wars: Squadrons Trailer

Star Wars: Squadrons Gameplay

While there isn’t an actual gameplay trailer just yet, the official EA listing lets us know that there will be a Star Wars: Squadrons gameplay reveal during EA Play Live on June 18th, 4 PM PDT. We did get a short taste of the action in the release teaser though.

As we tend to see with most upcoming EA games, the cinematic teaser for this game is something special. There’s lots of space-chase action, barrel rolls, and debris flying through the air. If you were a fan of the space battles in Battlefront 2, you’re going to love this.

Star Wars: Squadrons is set to take place just after the Battle of Endor – sorry, no Death Star action here folks. Instead, we’ll get to take part in a multi-character storyline that sees us take to the skies and stars as a member of the New Republic Vanguard and the Empire’s Titan squadron.

We’ll also see a big emphasis on multiplayer in this title, something that fans have been excited to see for a long time. In multiplayer, you’ll be able to pilot ships with up to four other squad members. You’ll fly strategic multiplayer space battles where the main aim is to destroy the opponent’s flagship. There will also be a “dogfight” mode where the sole aim is to take out as many enemy ships as possible, just as we’d see in a traditional team deathmatch mode.

Another bit of great news is the fact that Squadrons is set to feature crossplay between each of the platforms and will even be VR compatible. There isn’t any information on what headsets are compatible on PC just yet but we do know that PlayStation VR will be supported.

No Microtransactions This Time Around

After the huge waves of backlash during the release of Star Wars: Battlefront 2, it looks like there will be absolutely no microtransaction in Star Wars: Squadrons – something we hope stays true.

Instead, Squadrons will feature “rich” cosmetic and game-affecting customization options which can be earned solely through gameplay. We don’t have specifics just yet but it looks like players will be able to unlock new weapons, ship hulls, shields, and even engines as they progress through the ranks.

Final Word

With a return to the dogfighting action we all know and love, we’re anticipating this Star Wars title to be a huge hit when it releases. With an emphasis on multiplayer action, progression, and no microtransactions to speak of, it looks good so far.

We’ll keep you updated on any more news we hear about this game, including some gameplay footage once we have it. For now, be sure to check back regularly for all the latest updates.
