When you first jump into the PC version of Elden Ring on Steam in an ideal world your controller should work, but life isn’t always that simple and there are occasional kinks, especially with the game being new right now.

Elsen Ring does have controller support and the game, much like Dark Souls, etc al before it, was designed to be played perfectly on a controller.

Elden Ring controller not working

If you hop into the menu you will be able to see the default button bindings, as well as keyboard and mouse controls but it is easy to get yourself in a mess where you are using your keyboard and the game is still demanding you press B to go back out of a menu if you have your controller active.

As much as it might pain you, it is probably easier to just join the console crowd and pick up a controller. The game has clearly been designed with a controller in mind, and you don’t really need any extra handicaps.

If your controller isn’t behaving as you would expect it to do in Steam you need to go to Steam Big Picture Mode and head to the Settings option. From there Enable Xbox controller support and enable Generic Gamepad Support and restart Elden Ring.

This should fix it but if not, go back to the settings and disable the Steam Overlay. Many people are reporting that it is this last step that seems to fix their woes.

Enable Controller Support in Elden Ring

If you are still having no joy there is one final thing you can try and is to go to the controller tav in Elden Ring and set it to OVERRIDE TO STEAM INPUT – you will probably find it is on Default, to begin with, and you want to change that.

Don’t forget to navigate the menus you will need to use the D-Pad rather than the joysticks.
