There’s a cave located in the Stardew Valley farm, and one of the first decisions players must make is producing mushrooms or bats in the cave. Both options provide a unique set of pros and cons, but one option outweighs the other in terms of overall benefits. Here’s how to choose between mushrooms or bats in Stardew Valley, according to the kind of game you want to play. 

How to Unlock Farm Cave in Stardew Valley? 

Before you choose between mushrooms or bats, you’ll need to gain access to the farm cave. The farm cave is not accessible to players right in the beginning, and you will have to first earn 25,000g. 

After earning 25,000g, Demetrius will visit your farm and discuss using the cave for his research. You can now choose between mushrooms or bats. This choice cannot be undone and will remain for the rest of the game.

Should You Choose Mushrooms or Bats in Stardew Valley? 

Mushrooms

Choosing mushrooms as the item for the cave will automatically give you six mushroom bins inside the cave. Mushrooms grow from these bins at different rates, and you will get these variants: 

• Common Mushroom
• Red Mushroom
• Purple Mushroom
• Chanterelle
• Morel

The rate at which the mushrooms grow is affected by what time you go to sleep. Sending your player to sleep later at night causes the mushrooms to grow even faster. All items in the mushroom cave are ingredients for the Life Elixir, guaranteeing a steady stream.

Bats

Choosing bats will give you fruit bats on the floor every day. The fruits have different spawning rates but will be a steady supply of all variants of fruits. You will find: 

• Cherry
• Pomegranate
• Peach
• Apple
• Orange
• Spice Berry
• Apricot
• Wild Plum
• Blackberry
• Salmonberry

While these fruits are available in the outside world, they spawn inside bat caves irrespective of the season. Fruits are a great option for giving gifts to the characters of Pelican Town since they are universally liked (some loved!).
