It will come as no surprise to see the 12th generation of processors cost more than their predecessor but they do appear to be cheaper than first thought. According to VideoCardz the Core i9-12900K which features 16 cores (8 for performance and 8 for efficiency) and 24 threads will come in at $589 MSRP, which is an increase of around $50 on the 11900K. The KF variant of the i9, which doesn’t feature integrated graphics, will come in at $564. Both the K and KF variants will feature a turbo boost of up to 5.2 GHz.
The Intel Core i7-12700K and KF come with 12 cores ( 8 for performance and 4 for efficiency) and 20 threads, with a turbo boost of up to 5 GHz. These CPUs will come with an MSRP of $409 and $384 respectively, which is close to a $30 difference from the previous generation.
The Core i5-12600K and KF SKUs come with 10 cores (6 for performance and 4 for efficiency) and 16 threads, boasting a max turbo of 4.9 GHz. Unlike the i9 and i7 SKUs, the 12600K/KF will not feature Turbo Boost Max 3.0 technology. These processors will be priced at an MSRP of $289 and $264, which is around $30 more than their predecessors.
Part of the leak showed slides of gaming performance comparing the Intel Core i9-12900K against the Core i9-11900K and the AMD Ryzen 9 5950X. Until benchmarkers get their hands on the SKUs we need to take this with a pinch of salt but Intel claims the 12900K outshines the AMD Ryzen 9 5950X in seven out of nine games they tested.
The results showed the biggest increase in performance on Troy: A Total War Saga, offering 30% more FPS than the AMD flagship processor.
Rumours are, the top two 12th gen SKUs look promising, especially in Windows 11, so it is going to be a very interesting launch in the coming days.
