Lisa Su has said that silicon chip shortages will continue to remain tight through the first half of 2022, meaning that it’s likely we will see continuing graphics card shortages and high GPU prices for the immediate future. Although many had hoped that the GPU shortage would be coming to an end as 2021 draws to a close, it appears that this may not be the case.
Dr. Su made the comments about the silicon shortage during her interview at the Code Conference which recently took place in California. Read below to find out more!
Increased demand, not just from crypto
Although much has been made of the effect of crypto miners on increased GPU prices, Dr. Su was of the opinion that the bigger story has been the general increase in demand across the board, instigated by the COVID pandemic, which took manufacturers by surprise ‘nobody expected this much demand’. This is more the case with AMD however, given that Nvidia GPUs have been the most targeted by crypto miners in the past, forcing Nvidia to introduce their LHR (Lite Hash Rate) series of graphics cards, a measure that AMD has not had to resort to.
GPU shortage continuing until H2 2022?
Lisa Su stated that she believed silicon supply would continue to be ‘likely tight’ for H1 2022, and that we would see it alleviate during H2 2022. Dr. Su was careful however not to say exactly when she thought GPU prices and supply would fully return to normal, as ultimately this is not something anyone can accurately predict. Indeed, the unexpected recent government-imposed Chinese power shortages may be another headwind for graphics card supply in 2021 and onwards.
