Putting your PS5 into rest mode can be beneficial for a lot of players. It allows you to use less power while still charging controllers, keeping your games active, or performing updates. This state means your PS5 hasn’t completely shut down and will spring into action much faster.

The PS5, along with the Xbox Series X, is one of the best gaming systems for the price we have ever been graced with. If you owned the PS4, you may have already figured out that the process to put your console in rest mode is different, with the previous method requiring you to hold the PS button to access the menu.

Don’t worry, it’s just as simple.

How to put a PS5 in rest mode

  1. To put your PS5 into rest mode, first, press the PS button on your DualSense PS5 controller.
  2. When the menu pops up, select the power button in the far right corner.
  3. Now, select ‘Enter Rest Mode’ and your PS5 will now change its state.

Should you put your PS5 in rest mode or just turn it off?

When your PS5 is in rest mode, it is still eating power, albeit a smaller amount. So, keeping it in rest mode permanently will technically cost the bill payer more in the long run.

Rest mode is one of three options (the other two being restart and switch off) and will allow you to still charge your controllers, keep your current game active, and perform updates. If you don’t need to enter rest mode, you should shut your PS5 down completely.

How to turn off PS5 rest mode

To stop your PS5 from entering rest mode, navigate to the settings menu and select ‘Power Saving settings’. Now, click on ‘Rest Mode’ settings, and toggle the option to ‘Don’t put in Rest Mode’.

You can also disable rest mode via the PS5 power button. To do this, hold down the power button on the PS5, wait until the console beeps twice, and then release. Once those two beeps are heard, rest mode has successfully been switched off.

PS5 controller not charging in rest mode – fix

As you may now know, when your PS5 is in rest mode it will still charge your DualSense controllers. Sometimes, users are reporting a slight error on this front, where the controller fails to successfully charge in rest mode. This issue only seems to relate to the front USB Type-A port on the PS5. Sony released a firmware update a while back that should have fixed this issue, however, if you are on an earlier version for whatever reason then try the following:

  • Try one of the rear USB ports on your PS5
  • Use a different Type-A to C USB cable
  • Try a Type-C to Type-C cable
  • Use a standalone charger to avoid this entirely
