With previous iterations of the PlayStation consoles, we always get a Slim model sometime after the official launch. This used to be the old-fashioned, mid-gen upgrade before Sony started enhancing the console’s performance. Producing the PS5 at its original size elevates some pressure on manufacturing, with less time wasted on refining the internals of the console, so we tend to see the Slim a few years later.

The PS5 Slim has not been announced but it is one of those products many PlayStation fans will be expecting. When though? Well, a rumored release date for the PS5 Slim could be in the same time frame as the Pro version, if either actually ends up going into production.

Potential PS5 Slim release date?

If the rumors are true then the PS5 Slim release date could be at the end of 2023/ early 2024. The reason for thinking this is mostly down to what happened with every generation of PlayStation consoles to date. We saw the PS4 Slim come out around the same time as the Pro variant in 2016.

Will the design of the PS5 Slim be that much different?

A Slim variant of the PS5 would look incredible, with many seeing the original design as large and bulky. The Slim would also be lighter, making it fit in with a lot more home entertainment setups.

How much would the PS5 Slim cost?

As we saw previously with the PS4 Slim, the PS5 Slim would likely be cheaper. This could mean the console would cost around the same as the digital version at $399. As there is no news on the Slim yet, it is hard to tell whether Sony would release a disc and digital edition like they did with the original. If they did, we could see a digital PS5 Slim challenging the Xbox Series S value.

Possible PS5 Slim specifications- Will they be more or less the same as the original PS5?

Slim PlayStation models have never been worth an upgrade if you already have a perfect working original. These are better suited to those who still haven’t managed to find stock. It would be great to see Sony combine the Pro and Slim variant, making a truly awesome mid-gen upgrade for everyone but we understand this may be biting off a little more than they can chew.

PS4 Slim release date

The PS4 Slim was released in September 2016, two months before the Pro version came. This was nearly exactly three years after the original launch and we expect these same again from Sony.

Should you wait for a PS5 Slim? We are still possibly years away from the launch of the PS5 Slim but with the Pro version also potentially releasing at a similar time, it may be worth spending the extra cash. The Slim could offer a more affordable option but if the demand is still as high as it has been over the last year, it may be tricky to get your hands on one.
