The Forgotten Realms are abundant in Gods and deities, both malicious and kind. There are a wide variety of Gods in the Forgotten Realms, in some cases some Gods from all kinds of pantheons. However, it seems that for the time being – while in Early Access – Baldur’s Gate 3 will only be seeing the Gods originally from the Forgotten Realms. So sadly, you won’t be able to be a Cleric of Thor or a Paladin of Hades anytime soon. Instead, you’ll meet these new Gods each with their own different set of abilities and dominions.

If you’ve been playing the Early Access Baldur’s Gate 3 you might have noticed that Selune, Shar, Mystra, and Vlaakith are at the forefront of the game. But because BG3 is set right after the events of Descent into Avernus, we’ll likely be seeing more of The Dead Three (Bane, Bhaal, and Myrkul). In fact, there’s a large number of Gods who’ve already made their worship known. But if you want to know more about all of these Gods, then you’ve come to the right place! Here we’ll go through all the Gods you’ll find mention of in Baldur’s Gate 3.

Bane

Bane is a dark paragon of hate, fear, and tyranny. He ascended to godhood alongside Bhaal and Myrkul but loathes them both for taking power he believes is rightfully his.

Bane was the God of tyrannical oppression, terror, and hate. He was the face of pure evil and despotism. Bane was a wholly malevolent and brutal deity that distanced himself from mere mortals, preferring to reign over his followers from afar. He savored the terror he instilled in others and the hatred that formed in mortals’ hearts, utilizing this strife to gain greater control over the Realms.

Bhaal

Bhaal is the notorious god of murder, reborn after each of his descendants was viciously slain. He has a tenuous alliance with Myrkul and Bane, the three having attained divinity in a bargain with the fallen god Jergal.

Bhaal is known to be the God of violence and ritualistic murder. In some extreme cases, Bhaal’s mortal Bhaalspawn children could actually turn into creatures said to be one of the listed avatars after Bhaal himself died, but these incarnations were even more monstrous and inhuman in shape, acting as little more than powerful killing machines.

Helm, also known as the Vigilant One and The Watcher, was the god of guardians, protection, and protectors. Kelemvor

Fair but distant, Kelemvor guides the dead to their appropriate plane in the afterlife. His clergy provides last rites across Faerun, but also destroy undead that have escaped Kelemvor’s judgment. Fair yet cold, Kelemvor was the god of death and the dead—the most recent deity to hold this position, following in the footsteps of Jergal, Myrkul, and Cyric. Unlike these other deities, whose rule as gods of the dead made the afterlife an uncertain and fearful thing, Kelemvor promoted that death was a natural part of life and should not be feared as long as it was understood.

Typically his outfit included a tabard with projecting, ornamented shoulder plates, a cummerbund with an exquisitely beautiful scene painted on its medallion-shaped buckle, and open meshwork, point-toed boots with crystal teardrops dangling from the end of uppers, almost enough to touch the upraised toes.

Selune

The Lady of Silver presides over the moon, stars, and navigation. Her power over the heavens is constantly challenged by her sister Shar, who seeks to plunge the world into eternal shadow. Selûne, also known as Our Lady of Silver, the Moonmaiden, and the Night White Lady, was the goddess of the moon in the Faerûnian pantheon. She held the portfolios of the moon, stars, navigation, navigators, wanderers, questers, seekers, and non-evil lycanthropes. In the time of ancient Netheril, when she was a greater goddess, she held the portfolios of the moon, moonlight, and stars; beauty and purity; love and marriage; navigation and navigators; tracking, wanderers, and seekers; diviners and dreams; good and neutral lycanthropes; and autumn. Hers was the moon’s mysterious power, the heavenly force that governed the world’s tides and a mother’s reproductive cycles, caused lycanthropes to shift form, and drew one to the brink of madness, and back again.

Although Maya grew up and lived among the F1 cars and beaches of Monaco, she spent more time indoors playing on her Xbox 360. As she grew up, so did her love for games, particularly narrative-based games. She loved games that told a story or got her attached to characters. Now, Maya writes both articles about the latest games but also is writing her own novel. She one day hopes to be writing for games herself, especially fantasy RPGs!
