Ghostwire Tokyo manages to blend supernatural horror into its modern, neon-drenched world incredibly well. And nowhere is this more apparent than in the Hyakki Yako. It is at once surreal and incredible to see a parade of spirits passing through crossings and down city streets. And far from just being a creepy yet awe-inspiring sight, the Hyakki Yako is actually an incredibly useful event that you can take advantage of in Ghostwire: Tokyo. We’ll show you how to make the most of this parade of spirits with our Ghostwire: Tokyo guide.

Ghostwire Tokyo: How the Hyakki Yako works

It is very unlikely that you will forget the first time you see the Hyakki Yako in Ghostwire: Tokyo. The parade of spirits walking in a procession captures just how well the game creates its atmosphere. The spirit silhouettes range from dozens of Rain Walkers, through to gigantic cat-shaped spirits that command attention.

If get too close to the parade, you will be sucked into another dimension and forced to fight waves of enemies before being released. But far from being a punishment, this is one of the best ways to level up fast in Ghostwire: Tokyo. Hyakki Yako fights include a gigantic number of enemies, and that means a gigantic amount of XP is set to follow!

When does the Hyakki Yako appear?

You are likely to encounter the Hyakki Yako properly for the first time while pursuing the Maze of Death mission in chapter 2. KK’s initial advice is to stay away from the spirits, as Akira is only just getting to grips with his spiritual powers. But this is one instance where you’ll want to completely ignore what KK is telling you.

After surviving an encounter with the parade of spirits, you have no choice but to wait a while before facing another. You cannot cause this event to spawn simply by reloading the game. Once you complete a Hyakki Yako, another one will only appear in the game after a set amount of real-world time has passed. So, it isn’t possible to game the system and chain Hyakki Yakos back to back in order to grind XP. That being said, completing them whenever you can definitely grant you a sizeable boost to XP, so be sure to take on this parade of demons whenever you get the chance!
